GEN Canyon: “I have this, like, internal bonding with [Caps], because we’ve been together so many times.”

"Going all the way back to 2019, you know, we have so many great matches together [against G2], especially with Caps."

Q: How’s Vancouver? Any jet lag?

Canyon: We’re a little jet lagged. We’re not getting really good sleep, but still, I think everyone is feeling okay.

Q: Everyone else thinks GEN will win MSI — how confident are you?

Canyon: Oh, we didn’t get a lot of practice yet. We’re just about to get started, so I’m not really sure because we haven’t played on this current version of the patch, so we’ll have to see.

Q: People think you and Chovy are the two best players in the world. Thoughts?

Canyon: I’m very grateful for the comments like that, but we have to consider other regions as well, like LPL. And also, we are a few patches away from my [most] recent competitive match, so I think I still have to kind of adapt to it and show a better form.

Q: How much do you think only one Bo5 in LCK playoffs hurts your ability to prepare for MSI?

Canyon: Of course, playing more best of fives with a fearless draft format will be a huge addition to your experience, but I think it doesn’t really affect us much because we do have a lot of champions up our sleeve. So I don’t think we’re in big trouble in terms of lack of experience.

Q: FLY is at this tournament, and at Worlds they got a lot of attention for pushing you to 5 games. What do you think about them?

Canyon: Looking at their lineup, I think every player has their own kind of weapon and their own unique pick. So I think that’s gonna affect a lot — in a very good way — in the best of five format with fearless. So I’m very excited and looking forward to their matches.

Q: Junglers like Inspired and SkewMond speak very highly of you and emulate your style — and they’re both at this tournament. What do you think of Western players who learn from your style?

Canyon: I’m not really sure what they’re referring to as, like, Canyon style. […] But I’m very flattered, and then I’m also very grateful that they always leave a very positive comment about me.

But also, Inspired, you know, he used to play in the LEC. And whenever I watched the LEC matches, I’ve thought their jungle pathing, their game setup, gameplay is very creative and unique. I also try to learn from them.

Q: If G2 wins today, you’ll face them in the first round. You’ve got a long history, especially against Caps. What do you think about that matchup?

Canyon: Going all the way back to 2019, you know, we have so many great matches together [against G2], especially with Caps.

So I have this, like, internal bonding with him, because we’ve been together so many times. So I wish them good luck, and hopefully we can have a great match together.

Q: How do you think GEN is different with Ruler vs Peyz?

Canyon: Last year I think, especially [at] MSI, we were way ahead of other teams when it comes to understanding the lane swap meta. But this year, it’s very different, and lane swap is not, you know, technically a thing right now, and champion pool has changed so much when it comes to the AD carry role.

So I think what matters the most is finding your best kind of wardrobe that suits you the best in the current meta and the patch.

Q: Some people say GEN wins so many scrims that you can’t figure out what to draft, so your drafts are bad or illegal. What do you think about that idea?

Canyon: I also agree that winning every single scrim game is not good because of similar reasons. But actually, I don’t really think that we won, like, *every* single game during the LCK, so I’m not too worried about that.
