DIG Zven: “I don’t think I’ve proven anyone wrong so far”Interviews

Everyone’s still happy to just be in the house after scrims and hang out, just play solo queue, talk shit with each other.

After a win like that, what makes your scrim performance so different from stage performance?

We haven’t scrimmed 100T, so it’s hard to say, but scrims have always been different than stage. I’ve been in teams where we had a high win rate in scrims and we did poorly.

The thing is like, we say we have bad scrims, which is true, but the only teams that stomp us are FLY and TL, which regularly either 6-0 us, or 5-1 us, or 4-2 at best. Most of the time, we go 0-6, so, but C9, IMT, SR, are more [50-50 results]

[Our scrim winrate] is low because we’re scrimming FLY and TL more than once per week — if 3 out of 5 of your scrim dates are a 1-5, and you go 3-3 against Shopify, it’s still bad. But scrimming against these teams, we’re doing fine.

Do you think that the team plays at a lower level in scrims?

I think we play fine on stage. Just some people are too lax in scrims, they die to something stupid, and then the bad players think, “Ooh, I ganked mid lvl 3 this game, and it worked, I’ll do it on stage,” then you go on stage, the guy doesn’t die, and you’re like, “oh shit, no, I’m behind.” […] It’s bad that the guy in scrims dies to that gank and gives like bad practice in theory, [but] it’s also bad that someone thinks they can go on stage and it will work.

That’s why in competitive play you see junglers full clearing in a straight line, mirrored, take a crab, and then repeat. Scrims are just like that [everywhere]. People just are more loose, they test more limits, they try to outplay more, [etc].

How does it feel to prove the haters wrong on ADC?

I mean, I don’t think I’ve proven anyone wrong so far. I think C9’s bot lane is good at the game, but they aren’t a very hard bot to lane against, and neither is 100T, so I’ve had a very easy schedule individually.

I think I’ve played well in 4 games so far. G3 against C9 I didn’t play very well. But overall, I’m happy with my performance so far. I think it could’ve been a bit better, it can always be better — but I think I’m good with it.

I feel like as a team we have to get better, I’ve played with everyone on the team, so I’m comfortable with everyone. […] So I’m kind of responsible for bringing the team together. Once a month or two have passed, we can start working on ourselves more.

Right now, team play is the main focus, especially mid game. Once we get that sorted out, I can start focusing on myself a lot more. I won’t have to shot call or try to be a part of the team game as much, ADCs just tend to focus on their own gameplay a lot.

If Meech and Berserker aren’t hard to lane against, who is?

It’s hard to say, because in G1 for example I’m not playing against Meech. He’s not in my lane. He’s playing Senna and he’s running around the whole map and then he comes bot for 1 minute and dies in lane.

Now I’m playing Smolder with two kills, so that’s obviously him griefing the game — but last split, he was doing pretty solid. Also, if you put Meech in FLY instead, with a lot of veterans and good players, good coaching staff, and English speaking players, it’s a lot easier to improve than for Meech [right now], who has a team with 0 LCS champions. It’s hard to judge people like that, because you don’t know what they’ve been through to get there. But I don’t think lane was that hard.

What about the bot lane meta right now?

The game is a lot less about 2v2ing and winning. It’s more about pushing, getting crabs, getting dragons, getting prio to go mid to get grubs, this kind of stuff. So I kind of dislike how OP grubs are.

If you give three of them for a drake, that’s fine. But now you have to be on next grubs. I think the 4th is still like, it’s still okay, but if you get 5 or 6, now the whole game is warped around it.

You guys played well today, how do you see your trajectory overall?

You said we played well, right? But I think we played kind of bad today. I think that in game two we played well, we had like a big ass lead. But we got caught a lot and made a lot of mistakes.

It could’ve been like a 20 minute stomp if we had played better. In game one, I think we should have lost if our opponents were a little bit better. I was kind of smurfing that game on Smolder, […] but it’s hard to like, truly 1v9 on Smolder against those champs.

Any fun stories about the team so far?

I’m the only single one in the DIG house right now, everyone else has girlfriends and apartments and stuff, so I’m just on my own.

Are you looking to join that club?

I mean, I’m not actively looking but if she happens to spawn out of nowhere, then sure, we’ll see what happens, we never know. But yeah the team’s doing well, the atmosphere is really good. We have arguments, tough conversations, and overall it feels like everybody is cool.

The atmosphere is really good. Everyone’s happy. We have good memes, we have good inside jokes.

Do you know about the casters’ “Big Dig” meme wtih you guys?

That one I’m not a fan of, but if they like it I’m good with it — We have a generally good time, even though people have their own apartments and their girlfriends/wives to get back to. Everyone’s still happy to just be in the house after scrims and hang out, just play solo queue, talk shit with each other.
